Lockout, Tow, Flood: Emergency Triage Questions by Trade

Every emergency trade needs a short set of questions that decide, in under a minute, whether to wake someone: Is it happening right now? Is anyone at risk? Can the caller make it safe? Where exactly is it? The details differ by trade, from "can you shut off the main?" for plumbers to "is anyone locked inside?" for locksmiths.

The universal four

  1. Is it happening right now? Active leak, no heat now, locked out now.
  2. Is anyone at risk? Children, elderly, medical needs, a car on a highway.
  3. Can the caller make it safe? Shut-off valve, breaker, leave the house.
  4. Where exactly? Address, unit, or road and mile marker.

From questions to a decision

Questions only help if the answers lead to the same decision every time. Write the decision next to each answer ("still leaking after shut-off → emergency"), and the after-hours line can apply it without guessing.

Josie

Are you somewhere safe, off the road? Is anyone hurt?

Caller

Nobody's hurt. I'm on the shoulder of 290 westbound, just past exit 12.
